We’re on something of a Funko kick during the 31 Days of Halloween although it’s not necessarily by design. Funko has just been at the forefront the past few years with spotlighting horror toys and that’s exactly what we have for you today. It’s another figure from their Mystery Minis line, we covered Freddy Krueger from that series earlier this week.
A couple of years ago I reviewed Trick r’ Treat and didn’t give it a glowing review. I’ve softened some on it, and I think I was probably a bit too harsh back then. Maybe I’ll re-review it this year, but we’ll just have to see. One thing I did recognize even then, was that Sam, the little character who sort of weaves the various anthology stories together, was destined to become iconic. Funko have paid tribute to him here, including him with such horror luminaries as Freddy, Jason and Pinhead. That says a lot and he doesn’t seem out of place amongst that bunch.
Packaging:
The package is the same throughout this series. Very basic, but it includes some nice little drawings of the figures.
Sculpt/Paint:
There’s not the sort of deep sculpting lines that you’d find on most action figures with these Mystery Minis. They ride the line somewhere between stylized mini statue and designer vinyl. Clearly these have been inspired by the vinyl trends, even if they don’t necessarily fall into that category.
Sam has some great paint work, with a few little details really being brought to the forefront. He might be a touch flat but again it sort of plays into the design style here. He has a few areas that stand out among some of the other Mystery Minis, particularly the stitching work on the mask and his well painted back flap.
It’s definitely a nice little figure and undoubtedly Sam from Trick ‘r Treat.
He’s also around the smallest figure in this series. Which actually shows off a nice sense of scale given that these figures aren’t really beholden to that sort of thing. Sam is a tiny character, so it makes sense and I’m glad to see Funko recognized that. Even if it technically means less bang for your buck.
Articulation:
Funko Mystery Minis have no articulation whatsoever.
Accessories:
While Sam doesn’t come with any accessories, he does technically have one sculpted into his hand. It’s his little pumpkin face lollipop that was used as a weapon in the film. It’s actually quite nicely done here, and fits in with the rest of the motif.
Value:
As with Freddy, this guy is a decent value. I actually think Sam looks a little cooler, so he might be worth a bit more. Of course, he’s also a small figure and given that these are just hunks of plastic, you’re getting less per ounce as it were. Whether that matters to you or not is dependant on your position on that sort of thing.

Overall, I think Sam is a nice figure to have as part of your Halloween display. Unlike Freddy or someone slightly more iconic, he fits this style even better for some reason. It could be because the character is already “cute” and the unique design of these Mystery Minis lends itself well to this style.
